How Many Are Poor?

A high percentage of Milwaukeeans live in poverty. A full 156,000 Milwaukee County residents had incomes during the 2005-2007 period below 100% of the poverty line; while 164,000 had incomes between 100% and 200% of the poverty line. Thus, 17% of Milwaukee County residents subsided below the poverty line, while another 18% lived between 100-200% of poverty. In total, 35% were either poor or near poor.

In 2005-2007, a total of 438,000 Wisconsinites lived below 100% of the poverty line, and over 887,000 had incomes between 100-200% of poverty. In percentage terms, 8% of Wisconsinites were officially poor, while twice as many — 16% – lived between 100% and 200% of the poverty line. In total, 24% were either poor or near poor.
